The Flavours of South Africa
One of the most exciting aspects of South Africa is its fusion of so many cultures. In a country that has 11 official languages, it’s easy to understand why it’s called “The Rainbow Nation.”
Nowhere else is this fact more apparent than in its cuisine. Afrikaans, British, Cape Malay, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Indian, Portuguese, Xhosa and Zulu are just a few of the diverse ethnic influences that have been integrated into the diets and daily lives of South Africans. Add to this the country’s history as a top wine-producing area and you have a gastronomic gold mine.
Several of the recipes I share with you have been passed down from family members or close friends; the remainder are original creations inspired by my heritage. Even though some of the savoury recipes traditionally contain meat as the main ingredient, my approach will be all-vegetarian, but without compromising the integrity and taste of the dish.
So without leaving your kitchen, join me as we embark on a culinary safari to explore the vast and exciting flavour combinations of South African cuisine.
